According to the police, the victim Harmeet Singh, who runs an auto spare parts shop in Mayapuri area, had gone to New Khalsa restaurant to have dinner where the miscreants assaulted him.

The incident took place around 9.30 pm.

“A few of the eyewitnesses told us that the restaurant was packed with customers and the restaurant owner asked Singh to wait for a few minutes. In the meantime, Singh found an unoccupied chair that was with one the five accused,” said a police officer on the condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

The accused asked for the chair after which an argument broke out between the victim and the five people.

“They first assaulted him with batons, knuckle-duster and later stabbed on his back with a sharp object. All of them escaped when Singh collapsed,” the police said.

Singh, resident of Vikaspuri, was rushed to Balaji Max hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal said, “We have not found any concrete reason behind the incident. Prima facie it seems the assailants were drunk and got into a scuffle with the victim.”

Mahinder Singh, the father of the victim said, “My son did not do anything. Those men just pounced on him and started beating him up.”
