Sunanda Case: Police want Sashi Tharoor to take polygraph test

The police on Tuesday moved an application in the local court, seeking a polygraph test of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor to take forward the probe into the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

Sources in the police said that they are waiting for Tharoor to return from Europe to Delhi in the next week. The police will administer the test on him after taking his consent, on his return.

According to the procedure, the prosecution will have to move a plea before the court seeking permission to carry out the test.

Once that is done, Tharoor will be contacted for his consent. He will reportedly be contacted through his lawyer.

“The polygraph test is just a part of the probe. Like we carried out the test on the six witnesses, we may conduct it on Tharoor since he is the husband of the deceased. It does not, in any way, mean that he is a suspect. The case is under investigation and whatever needs to be done as part of the investigation will be done,” a senior police officer said.

Six persons, including three witnesses in the case, have already undergone the polygraph test, a detailed report of which has been submitted to the court.

Last month, Delhi police had approached a city court for permission to carry out a polygraph test on Tharoor’s domestic help Narain Singh, his driver Bajrangi and family friend Sanjay Dewan.

The court had later allowed the investigators to conduct the polygraph test on the three suspects with their consent.

S K Sharma, Vikas Ahlawat and Sunil Takru, were the ones who underwent the polygraph test. Tharoor has already been questioned thrice in this case.

The police have sent an application for the same and are awaiting a response.
