In a meeting held on January 25 about the SCBA, the General Body passed a resolution by 606 votes to 52 to approve the January 19 decision of the Executive Committee to dissolve it.

This is for the first time in the Supreme Court bar body’s history that it has been dissolved.

In an emergency meeting attended by 17 members on January 19, the SCBA had decided to dissolve itself, “After serious
discussions and after considering various options” and appointed a three-member interim board of three former SCBA presidents to run its affairs.

The committee comprising senior advocates K.K. Venugopal, P.P. Rao and P.H. Parekh have been entrusted with the task of holding fresh elections by March 2010.

According to the resolution passed by the Executive Committee and approved by the General Body, the interim board would have all the powers of the Executive Committee till the next elections are held.

The SCBA was not functioning properly as two groups led by two lady office bearers were at loggerheads on various issues and there had been heated exchanges in the SCBA meetings on several occasions.
