Thick fog envelopes Delhi, affects rail traffic

A thick blanket of fog engulfed the capital and adjoining areas on Saturday reducing visibility to 300 metres affecting normal life and rail and road traffic.

However, air services were operating on schedule as Runway Visibility Range was 1200 meters, airport sources said.

At least three trains had to be cancelled, while several others, including Rajdhani Express trains coming from Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram were running behind schedule, Northern Railway officials said.

Bhiwani-Farrukabad-Kalindi Express, Ambala-Allahabad- Unchahar Express and Delhi-Sealdah Lal Quila Express of the Northern Railways were cancelled, they said.

Tamil Nadu Express coming from Chennai, Saptakranti Express and Sadbhavna Express coming from Muzaffarpur, Karnataka Express coming from Bangalore, SarayuYamuna Express coming from Darbhanga, Kashi-Vishvanath Express coming from Varanasi and the Katihar-Amritsar Express were among the trains running behind schedule, the officials said.

Traffic moved slowly in the capital as visibility had dipped to 300 meters at 8:30 am. Vehicles moved with their head and tail lights on and honking horns frequently to keep jaywalkers at bay.

Temperatures in the capital dipped to 5.5 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below normal.

With the wind calm, the fog had not cleared till 10:30 am, though visibility had improved slightly to 500 meters, Met officials said.
