Delhi University (DU) is exploring double shifts and speedy recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff.

The university’s decision comes in the wake of the government's decision to implement quota for the OBCs by the next academic session, Observing that there was a need to increase the overall seats by 57 per cent to implement the 27 per cent quota for the OBCs without affecting seats in the general category, DU Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental said the scope to increase the seats was only five per cent.

This acording to Pental, was because of the present situation in terms of infrastructure and availability of faculty members. "Therefore, we are now exploring many possibilities like starting double shifts in our colleges and enhancing infrastructure. We have also started the process of recruiting teachers in our university departments and colleges," he said.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently sought information as to whether there is scope for increasing seats in the existing facilities, the VC said.
"We have marginal scope. I feel only about 2,000 to 2,500 seats can be added to the present capacity of 43,000 seats at the undergraduate level," he said.
