About the institution: The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) was established in July 1989 by an Act of the Maharashtra State Legislature. Its jurisdiction, originally for the state of Maharashtra, has now been extended now operates across the globe. It is one of the leading open universities in India and has won the Global Jurisdiction and Institutional Excellence Award from the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), Canada, in 2002. The university enjoys the membership of various associations and bodies such as the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

YCMOU’s main aim is to become a mass varsity and be able to make available, to the common man, educational programmes that are of practical use in day-to-day life that can provide better prospects for the future.

A special initiative of this university has been to offer education to those who are otherwise treated as social
outcasts, mainly as a result of their own doings. With a view to creating a positive attitude among prison inmates, through imparting education, the university has established study centres in the Central Jails at Nagpur, Kolhapur, Nashik, and Pune. It provides opportunities for academic counselling in the prison itself and the programme fees has been waived in their case.

Fees range: BA courses: R2300 to R10,300 (for three years); BCom: R6000 (for three years); BBA: R24000 to R60000 (for three years); BSc: R13950 to R40000 (for three years); BEd: R28300 (for two years); BLib and ISc: R8000 (for one year); bachelor in cooperative management: R2000 (for three years)

Support systems/ facilities for students: The university has a well-stocked Library and Resource Centre (LARC)
