Consulting remains top recruiting sector at IIM Bangalore

More than 450 offers across 200 job profiles were registered during the institute’s final placement season for the PGP Class of 2014-16

Consulting remained the top recruiting sector at IIM Bangalore this year with more than 30% of the batch of 409 students being hired by firms in this sector. There were 79 offers from strategy consulting companies alone including Bain & Company (17 offers), Accenture Strategy (16), Deloitte (14), The Boston Consulting Group (13), AT Kearney (11) and McKinsey & Co (8). The institute concluded its final placements on Thursday. Last year, 29% of 398 students got offers from consulting firms.

In a shift from last year, finance was the second most prominent recruiting sector with 17% of the batch being hired by firms. About 14% of the 398 students were placed by finance companies last year.

Ecommerce did not attract too many students this year with 13% of the batch getting offers from companies in this sector as compared to 15% last year. Amazon and Flipkart were the top hirers in this sector for the 2014-16 batch making 16 and 11 offers, respectively.

In a new trend observed this year, around 25% of the hirers were first-time recruiters. These new recruiters included startups, private equity venture capital firms, marketing companies and consultancies.

As many as 409 students got more than 450 offers across 200 plus job profiles this year and 160 companies took part in the process. There were 139 pre-placement offers extended to the students before the start of the final placements based on their performance during the summer internship. The lateral placement season for candidates with more than 22 months of work experience saw a total of 136 offers being made by firms in varied domains like consulting, business leadership, product management, operations, category management, and general management. About 18 students were offered international placements from various firms for global locations.

“In terms of the salary packages offered, there has been a general hike across the board. Strategy consulting firms and international banks were among those that offered highest packages. As a matter of policy, we do not disclose details of the packages offered,” said Sapna Agarwal, head - Career Development Services, IIM Bangalore.
