He's on right path: Bhagwant Mann’s mother as AAP leader takes over as Punjab CM

Mann won from Sangrur district's Dhuri Assembly constituency by a margin of 58,206 votes over Congress' Dalvir Singh Goldy.

Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister-designate from Punjab and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, is on the right path, said his mother Harpal Kaur.

Mann is all set to take over the border state’s reins as the Arvind Kejriwal-led party sweeps the Assembly election, counting for which is nearing an end.

“I am very happy. His father must have been happy too, to see his son becoming a chief minister… Earlier too, he was on the right path. Today also, he is on the right path...,” Kaur, who accompanied his son to the stage for his victory speech, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Mann won from Sangrur district's Dhuri Assembly constituency by a margin of 58,206 votes over Congress' Dalvir Singh Goldy.

Addressing party workers in his constituency, Mann said, “I will take oath as the CM in Bhagat Singh's village Khatkarkalan, and not at the Raj Bhawan.”

Further, he promised no government offices will have the chief minister's photos during his tenure. “There will be pictures of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Mann added.

Mann, a stand-up comedian-turned-politician, made his entry into mainstream politics in 2011 with the Punjab People’s Party and lost in the 2012 elections from the Lehragaga constituency.

In 2014, he joined the AAP and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Sangrur for two terms in a row.

According to updated available data with the Election Commission, the AAP has won 92 seats, which is well over the majority mark of 59.

In the 2017 elections in Punjab, the AAP, which was making a debut at the time, had managed to win 20 constituencies and stood third, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came second and the Congress won the election and formed the state government.
