Mar 10, 2022 05:49 AM IST

2022 UP Assembly election: On Tuesday Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters the Congress had fought 'as hard as we could'.

Hours before the counting of votes for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called on party workers to not be disheartened, saying 'our fight has just begun' and 'we have to move forward with new energy'. Ms Gandhi Vadra's message of positivity comes as exit polls predict yet another defeat for the GOP at the polls, with the ruling BJP set to retain UP, Manipur, and possibly Goa and Uttarakhand as well, while the Congress is predicted to lose Punjab to the Aam Aadmi Party.

"Despite the absence of a Congress government in the state for a long time, the way you fought for the people and remained committed to public service which is the real purpose of politics, I am very proud of this," she tweeted.

Ms Gandhi Vadra, who is the Congress' in-charge for this UP election, also said the result of these polls would be decided by the 'wisdom and understanding of the people' and that she and her party would respect their choice.

"Therefore, while respecting the mandate, all of us will have to prepare for continuing our struggle with the spirit of loyalty and dedication towards our country and state. Our fight has just begun, we have to move forward with courage and new energy," she asserted.

On Tuesday Ms Gandhi Vadra told reporters the Congress had fought 'as hard as we could' and would 'wait and see the results'.

UP voted over seven phases starting February 10.

Exit polls unanimously give the BJP victory in UP, with predictions ranging from 225 seats (Times Now-Veto) to 326 by India Today-Axis My India).

The Congress is expected to fare miserably, with exit polls showing it may not even get double digits. According to the Lokniti-CSDS poll it will get just 3 per cent of the vote share.

The majority mark in the 403-member UP Assembly is 202.
