UP Election Results 2022 LIVE updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP to create history in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday evening with the party set to return to power in the largest state with a huge majority. Despite a shrill poll campaign by the opposition, a wave of defections, and criticism over various issues - including the handling of Covid, safety of women, farmers issues - the BJP remained unaffected largely. The party won more than 250 of 403 assembly seats. Akhilesh Yadav - who had been taking on the BJP on a gamut of issues - was the Samajwadi Party’s chief ministerial candidate. He significantly improved on the Samajwadi Party's 2017 tally (54 seats). This time, the party is set to win over 120 seats. With caste dynamics playing a critical role as always in UP, Yadav's allies were leaders of the Jat community and those representing the backward castes. The Congress and Mayawati's BSP were also among the challengers. But both of them hadly registered their presence as votes were counted.

As the counting of votes begins at 8am at centres, a special focus will be given to Covid protocols.

With UP being a critical state, also sensitive, the Election Commission of India has implemented a “three-layered security” to combat any form of “rumour mongering, disinformation and breach of protocol” during counting of votes, officials said.

“Elaborate and foolproof arrangements have been made across the counting centres. All strong rooms, where polled EVMs are kept, are under three-layered security with inner cordon manned by central armed forces. Concerned candidates have been watching the strong room arrangements through CCTV coverage of 24x7,” EC secretary general Umesh Sinha said.
