UP polls: BJP wins seven seats in Lucknow, concedes two to Samajwadi Party
In the 2017 assembly polls, the BJP had won eight out of nine seats in Lucknow and lost only the Mohanlalganj seat to the Samajwadi Party.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained its supremacy in its bastion Lucknow where it won seven assembly seats on Thursday. But the ruling party lost the Lucknow West and Lucknow Central seats to the Samajwadi Party (SP). Both Lucknow West and Lucknow Central are urban constituencies. Lucknow had voted in the fourth phase of the UP polls on February 23.
In the 2017 assembly polls, the BJP had won eight out of nine seats in Lucknow and lost only the Mohanlalganj seat to the Samajwadi Party. Even this time, all the nine assembly seats in Lucknow district witnessed a straight contest between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party.
The BJP won the three urban seats of Lucknow Cantonment, Lucknow East and Lucknow North. It also bagged all four semi-urban and rural seats of Bakshi Ka Talab, Sarojini Nagar, Malihabad and Mohanlalganj.
Uttar Pradesh law minister Brajesh Pathak of the BJP won the Lucknow Cantonment seat convincingly margin of 39,512 votes, defeating the Samajwadi Party candidate Surendra Singh Gandhi, who got 68,635 votes. Pathak was elected MLA from Lucknow Central in 2017 but switched to the Cantonment seat this time and polled 1,08,147 votes.
The BJP lost the Lucknow Central seat to the SP’s Ravidas Mehrotra by 10,935 votes, according to the Election Commission website.
Mehrotra received 1,04,488 votes while the BJP candidate Rajnish Kumar Gupta got 93,553 votes.
Uttar Pradesh minister Ashutosh Tandon Gopalji retained the Lucknow East seat for the BJP. He defeated SP candidate Anurag Bhadauriya by 68,731 votes. Tandon received 1,52,928 votes while Bhadauriya polled 84,197 votes.
BJP’s Neeraj Bora retained the Lucknow North seat, defeating the SP’s Pooja Shukla by 33,953 votes. Bora polled 1,39,159 votes and Shukla got 1,05,206 votes.
In Lucknow West, SP candidate Armaan Khan defeated the BJP’s Anjani Kumar Srivastava by 6,184 votes.
In Sarojini Nagar, former Enforcement Directorate officer Rajeshwar Singh of the BJP defeated his nearest rival Abhishek Mishra of the SP by 56,628 votes. Singh received 1,60, 628 votes while Mishra polled 1,04,440 votes.
Similarly, in Bakshi Ka Talab, BJP candidate Yogesh Shukla defeated SP’s Gomti Yadav by 27,788 votes.
Shukla polled 1,47,922 votes while Yadav received 1,20,134 votes.
In Mohanlalganj, BJP’s Amresh Kumar defeated the SP candidate Sushila Saroj by 17,448 votes. The BJP has won the Mohanlalganj seat for the first time.
In Malihabad, sitting BJP MLA Jai Devi retained the seat, defeating SP candidate Surendra Kumar by 9,545 votes. Jai Devi polled 1,08,372 votes and Surendra Kumar got 98,827 votes.
