Jr NTR's ‘American accent’ on Golden Globes red carpet inspires hilarious reactions: 'Unleashing his inner Anil Kapoor'
Jr NTR was asked a few questions on the Golden Globes red carpet on Tuesday night but his thick accent got all the attention.
Jr NTR had a big night along with the rest of the team of RRR, SS Rajamouli's pre-Independence epic that was nominated for two Golden Globe awards on Tuesday night. The team arrived excited on the Globes red carpet and answered a few questions for the media. However, it was Jr NTR who gained the most attention. All thanks to his very fresh accent.
Speaking about the film and Naatu Naatu, the song from RRR that ultimately won the Best Song award, Jr NTR said, “We thought, taking Rajamouli's track record into consideration, we definitely thought we had a winner. But this was something more than a winner in Japan and today, America… come on, you don't expect this to happen.”
He also spoke about wanting to do a Marvel movie and how his fans have been going ‘berserk' about it. He then sweetly gave interviewer Mark a gift as it was his birthday.
But as soon as the clip was posted on Reddit, all anyone seemed to talk about was Jr NTR's accent. “NTR unleashing his inner Anil Kapoor,” wrote one, reminded of Anil Kapoor, whose accent also inspires a lot of jokes from time to time. “Oh can’t wait for the Oscars version,” wrote another. “'aMERIca'. Lol it sounds like a weird mix of fake American and British accents,” noticed another Redditor. Another asked, “When an American comes to India, he is isn't picking up Indian accent to talk to us. We figure it out, don’t we? Why do we need to put up an accent for them?”
However, some even defended Jr NTR. “Can Indians stop mocking other Indians for their accents? A lot of these goras do not understand our normal accent and they can also make some of us feel intimidated. Imagine being an Indian at the Oscars. Just cut him some slack! The guy is a solid one and a good actor. It's his moment and well-earned. He can speak however he wishes to,” wrote a person. “Am I the only one who doesn’t mind it? What’s so bad about him putting on that accent and talking,” read another comment.
Naatu Naatu, a dance number featuring stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan, was competing against Taylor Swift's Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing, Ciao Papa from Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Lady Gaga's Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, and Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, performed by Rihanna. Rajamouli's directorial was also nominated in the Best Non-English Language Film category at the 80th Golden Globes but lost it to Argentina, 1985.
