Yoga teacher to celebs like Katrina Kaif, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, Deepika Mehta is your new must-follow Instagrammer. The 30-something yoga teacher and body-positive activist has posted 1,900 photos of herself in every yoga pose you can imagine — some of these will make your jaws drop just as quickly as they’ll inspire you to roll out a mat and do some yoga. It’s just amazing to see all the daring postures Deepika can do. She has over 1,50,000 followers on Instagram, including actor Alia Bhatt.
There are a million and one people (including stars like Malaika Arora and Kareena Kapoor Khan) on Instagram who do yoga and post pictures about it. But what’s even more impressive than Deepika’s mastery of Ashtanga Yoga (an ancient dynamic system of yoga that links body movements to breath) is her inspiring body positivity. Deepika teachs yoga just as much as she teachs self-acceptance.
Case in point: Deepika’s post on Tuesday that shows yoga is for every body, and that flexibility isn’t reserved for the small bodies we’re used to seeing on the cover of magazines.
To all the girls and women out there. You Don’t have to have a perfect body, You don’t have to own the latest brands, You don’t have to have perfect white skin, You don’t need to be skinny, You don’t need to get a mans attention and fit into his idea of beauty for validation, You don’t need to starve yourself, You don’t need to look a certain way, You don’t need the latest fashion accessories, You don’t need the perfect fitness/Yoga gear, You don’t need to be anything, ..but you do need to find what your passion is, You do need to be fearless, You do need to feel strong, You do need to be fierce, You DO need to feel empowered.. This is the stuff life is made of.. Not that fake B.S.. Please stop feeling the need to conform.. Be real, Be kind, Be Your true Authentic self.. That is Truly enough.❤️🙅🏼♀️👸🏽🔱💪🏽
Deepika, who travels the world teaching yoga in exotic locations, is full to the brim with love and yoga knowledge. If you live in Mumbai, you should make the time to go to one of her yoga classes, where she offers workshops that focus on core strength training drills and build up to basic and more advanced arm balances, as well as acing headstands, forearm balance or handstands.
Deepika, who reportedly wanted to become a professional jazz dancer, has been practising yoga for almost two decades and has an incredible story as to how she got into it. A note on her website, Now We Are, reads:
“She encountered the teaching while on the quest to heal herself from a near death rock climbing accident. When doctors told her she would never walk again, she took matters into her own hands and found the healing powers of Ashtanga, meditation and Pranayama. Today, Deepika is one of the most recognisable teachers in India and spends most of her time teaching around the world!”
Deepika is a reliable source for scenic yoga shots and her whole Instagram is a breath of fresh air. Nothing pretentious about her. Just a fit woman doing some yoga — and inspiring everyone else to do the same. Scroll to see her show 10 more yoga postures that are clean, in alignment, aesthetically beautiful and awe-inspiring.
The last few days have been the most peaceful that I have experienced in a long time. There has been a dropping away of all grasping, planning, projecting into the future ..there is a feeling of disassociation from all the stories of ‘me and my life‘ and connecting with the one watching those thoughts. There has been a little less looking at my phone and a little more of looking out at trees. Little less of social media and little more of connectivity with my family. A coming back to the present moment, rather than reminiscing in the past or projecting into the future. ..a feeling of coming Home. . Not sure how long this will last, before I jump back on the incessant stream of thoughts and ‘doing’, but for now I’m heaving a sigh of letting go and am content to just be.🙏🏻☮️🕉 #cominghome #peace☮️
The last two weeks have been an intense bubble of teaching here at our retreat in Purple Valley. It always takes a lot of energy to constantly stay inspired to be able to motivate others but it helps when the people you are surrounded by are beautiful, and have the most positive energy. I am so grateful that this world of Ashtanga always helps me be around such people. This to me is the real gift and juice, this tribe of beautiful, free- spirited souls loving this journey. I truly feel blessed for this gift.🙏🏻❤️💖
I was never into Yoga, gymnastics or any form of discipline till my early 20’s.I was neither remotely flexible nor strong. In fact if anything I was mediocre(or below) at sports, athletics etc. But my accident sparked something within me, a desire to express and move in ways I had never imagined I would, and till today that burning passion is one thing I can say has been ignited in me forever. So next time You think ur too old to start something or that you will never EVER be good at something, rethink it.. because the potential of the human spirit is indeed limitless..🔱🌟❤️ . P.s: On that note, I still have a long way to go before I can reach my goals and for that I am actually grateful, it’s what keeps me hungry and passionate.👊🏽🔥🔥
The moment you become aware, that the only thing holding you back, is a disbelief in your power, or a lack of self worth, or the voice of "you -are-not-good-enough", you kick your inner shit’s ass and change everything forever and ever, and never again will you be who you are.Amen.🙏🏻👊🏽🔱 . . ..and the day came when the risk it took to remain tightly closed in a bud, Was more painful than the risk it took to Bloom. ..this is the Element of Freedom.🌹🌟✨💫 . When you fill yourself up with gratitude, all fear disappears and abundance appears. . I have had a few challenging painful experiences in my life, and the one biggest lesson that these experiences have taught me is that if I keep dwelling in the situation and harbouring negativity by constantly talking about the situation and energising it even more, the situation gets worse, however if I see the situation as it is but instead start to focus on all else in my life that I have reason to feel grateful for and fill myself up with that feeling of gratitude, eventually the negativity dissolves and loses its power. In any given situation positivity always wins.🌟🙏🏻❤️☮️ . So as this year is coming to an end stay focussed on all that's positive in your life and on the goals that you have, to create more abundance and watch the magic of gratitude happen.💫🌟☀️✨💖 . Tomorrow morning as you wake up write down 10 things that you are grateful for in your life. Don't just write this stuff but actually fill yourself up for a few min. with that emotion of Gratitude.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻☮️❤️
This morning I had an awesome time hanging out with the girls after practicing with them; talking about all things feminine, laughing at silly things, sharing deep and yet keeping it light. ..and it felt so healing, and good for my spirit. Women supporting each other, is so important ..as it's empowering and nurturing, this is why for millennia women would gather in circles and share and dance and celebrate. Even on one of my treks in the mountains of Garhwal I came across a group of local mountain women and they told me that every once in a while they gather, trek together to spots in the mountains and have evenings , drinking the local toddy together, and singing and dancing together!!!💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 My mom recently did a pilgrimage to a sacred spot in India with her girlfriends and when I saw her after her return I could feel how much more power and joy she had. Sisterhood is therapy and medicine for the soul. Make sure you get regular doses all you beautiful Goddeses!!!💃🏽👩❤️👩👩👩👧👦👑 . . . 📸 @sigismondiphotography
