European champions Portugal finished third in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup after beating Mexico 2-1 in their third place play-off match. After an agonising loss in the semifinals to Chile, Portugal were left to play the play-off match without Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid star was excused from the squad following Wednesday’s penalty shootout defeat to Chile in the semi-finals, returning home to meet his newborn twins.
