A man was allegedly conned of ₹20,000 by two fraudsters, who acted as Good Samaritans and offered to help the victim withdraw cash from an ATM on Tuesday. The police said that the suspects switched the ATM card with a replica while pretending to help and later withdrew money from the account linked to the card.
According to the police, the incident took place around 12.15pm when the victim, a native of Rajasthan who works in Sector 48, had gone to an ATM near Shiv Chowk and was unable to conduct a transaction when two men, who were lurking near the kiosk offered assistance.
“The suspects told him that he was swiping the card incorrectly and asked if they could try on his behalf. He agreed and gave his ATM PIN. After swiping the card a couple of times, the suspect returned a card, claiming that there was some technical default in the machine,” assistant sub-inspector Surender said, adding that this is when they switched the card.
“Later, they withdrew ₹20,000 from the victim’s account. The victim realised that he had been conned after he reached his house and received text messages of the transaction,” Surender said.
The police said that they have written to the concerned bank, asking for permission to procure the ATM’s CCTV camera footage to identify the suspects involved. A case was registered against unidentified suspects under sections 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code on Tuesday.
On February 5, a retired head constable with the Delhi police was allegedly duped of ₹19,000 by a man who had offered help in withdrawing cash from an ATM and allegedly switched his card in Dhankot.
