Homeless labourers protest razing of slums

Nearly 10 hours after the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon removed all 500 slums from the restricted forest area of Aravali at Sikandarpur on Friday, the dwellers held a demonstration in front of civic body commissioner Ashok Sangwan’s residence.

Nearly 10 hours after the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) removed all 500 slums from the restricted forest area of Aravali at Sikandarpur on Friday, the dwellers held a demonstration in front of civic body commissioner Ashok Sangwan’s residence.

“The corporation removed our shelters. Where will we go now? We need a place to live,” said Suresh Kumar, a labourer.

A large number of labourers gathered and shouted slogans against the MCG.

The gathering dispersed only after an assurance from Sangwan. The labourers also gave a representation to Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda demanding alternative arrangements.

MCG joint commissioner Anju Chaudhary said, “We removed all slum dwellings spread across the forest area and around the Sikandarpur marble market.”

She added, “We had issued a warning to these dwellers to vacate the forest land but they did not.”
