A 35-year-old car cleaner allegedly committed suicide after stabbing and injuring his wife at their residence in Sector 65 on Tuesday morning, police said, adding that the deceased was drunk when he attacked his wife in a fit of rage after an argument over habitual drinking.

The deceased, a native of West Bengal, used to clean cars and drive an auto rickshaw. The couple got married five years ago; this was his second marriage, police said.

According to initial probe, the man would allegedly beat his wife after consuming alcohol. Police said the couple allegedly fought frequently over the issue and the neighbours had also complained to the police about this abusive behaviour numerous times.

On Monday around 10pm, the man had returned home allegedly in an inebriated state and started hurling abuses at his wife. When she tried to stop him, he got enraged and started assaulting her, police said. When the deceased did not stop despite her repeated requests to stop using abusive language, the victim raised an alarm and called the neighbours, who intervened and objected to the man’s behaviour, police said. The man then started misbehaving with the neighbours and asked them to leave, police said.

“An argument broke out between the husband and wife after which the woman went to her room and locked herself in. On Tuesday morning, the husband woke up early and barged into the room, where the wife was sleeping and stabbed her several times with a kitchen wife. Wife fell on the floor, bleeding,” assistant commissioner of police (crime) Shamsher Singh said.

“Fearing police action, he went to another room and hanged himself with a cloth. Though the neighbours rushed both the husband and wife to the hospital, he was declared brought dead,” Singh said.

The police said the neighbours also rushed the wife to Civil hospital from where doctors transferred her to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The hospital authorities informed the police about her injuries. A police team from Sector 65 police station recorded her statement.

The wife survived the attack and was discharged from the hospital after being administered first aid.

The man’s body was handed over to his family after the post-mortem examination on Tuesday afternoon.
