Star Benedict Cumberbatch has officially started filming for the upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange and he’s in the neighbourhood. Images taken on the set in Nepal show a bearded Cumberbatch on the crowded streets as he shoots for a scene.

The production will shoot a schedule in Nepal before heading to London to work on the soundstages where other Marvel films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers were also shot.

Cumberbatch leads one of the best casts ever put together for a Marvel movie. Director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) has rounded up Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Rachel McAdams.

Doctor Strange is a fresh new direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Thor: The Dark World tackled some fantasy elements, this one is the first Marvel film to fully embrace pure fantasy. It’s also an unlikely movie for horror specialist Scott Derrickson.

These images are proof that while effects heavy entertainment may be Marvel’s forte, real on-location shooting is just as important.

We don’t really have much context to go by: There is nothing aside from an official logo to look at. But reports suggest that the scenes being shot are from a prologue of sorts, before Doctor Strange gets his strange powers.

Doctor Strange is due out in almost exactly a year on November 4, 2016.
