Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4, say that they’ve learned to tune out negativity about Infinity War’s ending, and that the fourth film is their best Marvel movie yet.

As Avengers 4 heads into reshoots ‘in the next month or so’ directors, Joe & Anthony Russo said at the San Diego Comic Con that they have made a conscious decision to not let any negativity affect their filmmaking. The end of Avengers: Infinity War had left the fans reeling.

“You know, it’s always an agenda of ours to block out the outside noise because it can lead you to make some bad choices with the material,” Joe Russo told Deadline on the sidelines of the annual convention, where he was promoting an upcoming TV series that the brothers have produced. “We’ve learned over the years just to listen to ourselves, and it’s great that there’s two of us that we can have conversations with each other. We can really stay insulated and reinforce one another in our belief in the story that we’re telling.”

Russo said that the fact that they had already shot the fourth Avengers film back-to-back with Avengers: Infinity War meant that the story was already locked and no major changes could take place. “I feel like with Avengers 4, because it was made before there was any response to Avengers 3, it’s really pure in that regard. The storytelling is very pure. It’s without any sort of external noise creeping in at,” he said.

Russo also said that Avengers 4 might be the brothers’ best movie yet. The film has been shrouded in secrecy, with very little official word escaping the monumental production. “You know, we’re very proud of it. I think ultimately Avengers 4 may be our best work for Marvel,” Russo said. “I think we’ve grown with every movie that we’ve made there. We’ve grown with the characters. We’ve grown with the cast. As filmmakers we’re very happy and very excited with the movie.”

Speculation about the film, touted as the epic conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, has been high ever since the blockbuster success of Infinity War, which has become the biggest box office success in Marvel’s history, making over $2 billion worldwide. Cinematographer Trent Opaloch provided the biggest hint as to the film’s title, when he listed on his website that the fourth film will be called Avengers: End Game. The post was soon edited when fans spotted the potential gaffe.

Marvel chief Kevin Feige has said that the film’s title will be revealed towards the end of this year and closer to the release of Captain Marvel, which will lead into the fourth Avengers movie, billed as the epic conclusion to this version of the MCU.

It has long been rumoured that the next film will have a plot which has the surviving Avengers either travel back in time or into an alternate dimension to save the ‘dead’ superheroes, who were reduced to dust at the end of Infinity War..

Avengers 4 has been scheduled for a May 2019 release.
