Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming superhero sequel, Deadpool 2, is tracking to open with huge numbers at the box office. Initial reports suggest that the film is poised to make $150 million (Rs 1000 crore) in its opening weekend in the US, ahead of the first film’s $132 million haul.

The original Deadpool was the surprise hit of the summer, exceeding expectations at the box office to eventually break the record for the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. The movie finished its theatrical run with $783 million worldwide.

A sequel was greenlit almost immediately. According to the Hollywood Reported, Deadpool 2 tracking was reported shortly after the 20th Century Fox showcase at the Las Vegas CinemaCon. According to AFP, “There were no cast members at CinemaCon but Fox kicked off with a chorus line of dancers, followed by Reynolds appearing in a video message to apologize for his absence. Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson was seen waking with a hangover in the video, dressed in a suit and wearing an outfit from The Greatest Showman.”

Deadpool 2 is directed by David Leitch and also stars Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. The film will feature the cinematic debut of X-Force, a sister squad to the more popular X-Men.

The film is scheduled to open on May 18.
