This was Captain America’s original heroic entry in Avengers Infinity War
Directors of Avengers: Infinity War, Joe & Anthony Russo, have revealed that Captain America’s heroic entry was originally planned differently.Updated: Aug 03, 2018 16:04 IST
Captain America’s introduction in Avengers: Infinity War was slightly overshadowed by the scene in which Thor returned to Earth in Wakanda. But the directors, the Russo brothers, had initially planned for Cap to be introduced in that scene.
In a new interview to Entertainment Weekly, the brothers said, “Everybody at Marvel, I think other than Joe and I, they were mad at us because we were bringing him in the movie so late. We thought it was the right spot to do it, but after a while we kind of gave into everybody’s, ‘We need more Cap!’”
In the film, Cap is introduced in a Scottish subway, as he steps out of the shadows and fights Thanos’ minions, the Black Order. The famous Avengers theme plays in the background and all the ingredients are in place for the audience to whoop with excitement.
“He had Thor’s heroic entrance in the Wakanda battle. That was originally Cap,” Joe Russo added. “Our thinking was that he was on the run, nobody could find him, and so we thought that it would be this really compelling way to use the character — especially because we were trying to thin the ranks out so we could track everyone — and then we realized we had a really good spot to bring him in earlier in Scotland, to save Vision and Wanda. And so we started moving around heroic moments for characters.”
Anthony continued, “So (we were) playing with this idea that it’s hard for Tony and Cap to get back together on the same team and having Cap sort of be late to the party because (Cap, Black Widow, and Falcon) are forced to live underground, and then hiding from the government. That was always the basic premise of the movie for us.”
The film’s writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had previously said that Thor’s introduction was the film’s most indispensable moment. Speaking to filmmaker Kevin Smith on his popular Fatman on Batman YouTube show, Markus and McFeely said that the moment when Thor returns to Earth, flanked by Rocket and Groot was the one they knew would never be removed from the final cut of the movie, “Because the whole thing is built off of that.”
The Avengers will next be seen in Avengers 4, due out in May 2019 and touted to be a ‘significant conclusion’ to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it.
