A nine-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and killed along with her minor brother by unidentified men, who threw their bodies in a river after the crime, on Sunday in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, police said on Monday.

Police said they have registered a case against the unidentified men and launched a massive manhunt to track them after the crime in the village under Paru police station area.

“The parents have identified three persons of the same village as the culprits. The complainant had recently evicted one of the accused from his land and they had several rounds of a verbal duel on this,” senior superintendent of police Harpreet Kaur said.

“We are investigating the matter keeping all the possibilities in mind,” she added.

The matter came to the light when the children’s parents went looking for them after they did not return home till late evening on Sunday. The father said in his complaint to the police that his children had gone to the field with their cattle.

“The cattle returned in the evening but my children did not. So, we tried to search for them in nearby places. Finally, we found their bodies on the bank of the other side of Baya River,” he said.

He alleged his daughter was killed after being gangraped and his seven-year-old son was murdered for resisting the culprits.

Police have sent the bodies for an autopsy at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital.

This is the latest incident of crime against girls and women, which has been on the rise in Bihar. According to government records, 127 minors and women were raped in the first three months of 2018 and the figures almost doubled by June end.

It also comes close on the heels of the exposure of sexual exploitation of inmates of a shelter home in the district.

At least 46 girls were rescued from the shelter home after a report said a sex-racket was being run in the facility, and the inmates were subjected to sexual and physical torture—one of them was reportedly killed and buried on its premises.
