Bengaluru metro pillar collapse: Contractor, BMRCL officials named in FIR

Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra on Wednesday said an FIR (first information report) was filed against eight persons in the metro pillar collapse case.

A woman and her son were killed after an unconstruction metro rail pillar collapsed on Tuesday.

A case has been registered against Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC), five of its officials and two of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

An official communication from the home minster’s officer listed those in the FIR as: “A1,Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC); A2 Prabhakar, JE NCC; A3 Chaitanya, Director NCC; A4 Mathai, SPM NCC; A5 Vikas Singh, PM NCC; A6 Lakshmipathi, Supervisor NCC; A7 Venkatesh Shetty, deputy chief engineer BMRCL; and A8 Mahesh Bendekari, Executive engineer (EE), BMRCL”.

“We’ll take action for sure. It’s utter negligence by the company,” Jnanendra said.

Meanwhile, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) suspended three officials a day after the incident, officials said on Wednesday.

BMRCL managing director Anjum Parvez said the cause of the accident will be clear after the probe.

“In connection with the incident, three officials – deputy chief engineer, executive engineer, and section supervisor – have been suspended,” Parvez added.

The MD said a team from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will probe the accident and submit a report.

Parvez said a notice was also issued to the contractor, Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC).

“Another notice will be issued today. After we receive the report from IISc, we will take the necessary action.”

A woman and her 2.5-year-old son were killed after a steel pillar at an under-construction metro line collapsed on them on Tuesday morning.

The woman’s husband and a one-year-old child, who were travelling on the motorcycle, however, escaped uninjured in the accident.

According to BMRCL, a bunch of vertical TMT bars were erected in a circular column to build pillar number 218 for Namma Metro’s 38.44-km KR Puram-Airport line under Phase 2B collapsed, resulting in the death.

The column weighing several tonnes that fell about 40 feet along the busy road in HBR Layout at 10.45am, said officials.

“Around 10.45am, a metro pillar collapsed and hit a bike, on which four people were travelling. Father Lohith and mother Tejaswini and twins (one son and daughter). Tejaswini and the son were seriously injured and immediately shifted to Altius hospital. Unfortunately, Tejaswini and her son died,” Bheemashankar S Guled, DCP East, had said.
