Manipur MP seeks deportation of illegal immigrants before delimitation exercise
BJP MP Leishemba Sanajaoba demanded that the authorities detect and deport Illegal Immigrants before starting any exercise to alter Manipur’s electoral constituencies
NEW DELHI: Manipur’s Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on Thursday demanded implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify illegal immigrants in the strife-torn state.

Sanajaoba said the government should implement NRC to detect illegal immigrants with 1951 as the base year before the delimitation process is started in the state since its demography had undergone striking changes over the last decades.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, the BJP MP said it would not be conducive to alter the existing electoral constituencies of the state on account of the present law and order situation in Manipur. The state is currently under President’s Rule.
“The abnormal and illogical increase of villages in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur, and Pherzawl since 1969 to 2024 is 731 to 1,624, an abnormal jump of 593 villages, that is 122 per cent in about 50 years,” he said.
“In contrast, in the Naga-dominated areas, the increase was from 527 to 576 villages, only 9% increase,” he said.
The lawmaker claimed illegal immigrants were trying to penetrate the administration.
“They are also playing electoral politics through illegal infiltrations by taking advantage of the highly porous Indo-Myanmar International Border,” he said.
“My humble submission to the Government of India is that before proceeding further for any kind of alteration, like delimitation process in the existing electoral constituencies, it is mandatory to detect illegal immigrant fist by implementing the NRC with the base year 1951 and deport them to their respective countries,” the BJP MP said.
