US President Donald Trump said that any peace agreement must ensure Tehran could not obtain a nuclear weapon and that the Strait of Hormuz was reopened immediately.

Iran war news highlights: US President Donald Trump said he would be “honoured” to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. “I don’t want to meet, but if I did meet, I’d be honoured to meet him,” Trump said, adding, “But if we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him. I’d be OK with that,” and that he would “be respectful”.

Several people were killed and others injured in Israeli air strikes across Lebanon, less than 24 hours after Lebanese officials agreed to halt the war during a series of meetings in Washington, DC, with Israeli representatives.

Commenting on the ceasefire, which has yet to take effect, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem said it amounts to “surrender and defeat” for Lebanon. He added that northern Israel would remain under threat as long as Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue.

The commander of Iran’s IRGC Quds Force said Hezbollah's minimum demand is an Israeli withdrawal to the positions it held before the US-Israeli war on Iran began at the end of February.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that at least 11 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks over the past 24 hours, with dozens more wounded.

'Lebanon will never be stable unless Israel withdraws'

Iran’s revolutionary guards on Thursday said that the region will never be stable unless Israel withdraws from occupied areas in Lebanon, Reuters reported citing state media.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem called for a comprehensive ceasefire and Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon. An official from the group also confirmed that Hezbollah has rejected a truce announced following US-brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon in Washington, AFP reported.

Envoys from Israel and Lebanon held a fourth round of US-mediated talks in Washington on Wednesday, during which they agreed to implement a ceasefire contingent on Hezbollah stopping its attacks.

However, a Hezbollah official told AFP on Thursday that the group had rejected the agreement, which Lebanese President Joseph Aoun had earlier described as the “last chance” to secure a comprehensive truce.

Iran-US progess

Fresh ambiguity has emerged on peace talks as Iran's foreign minister said that "no tangible progress" has been made in negotiations, even as US President Donald Trump expressed optimism over an agreement.

US President Donald Trump voiced optimism on a deal recently, telling reporters at the White House “it could happen...over the weekend.”

Hezbollah says attacked Israel

Lebanon's Hezbollah said it had attacked troops in northern Israel on Wednesday, as Israeli strikes killed at least nine people in southern Lebanon, dampening hopes for an end to the cycle of violence.

US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he had brokered a deal that Lebanon said would halt Israeli attacks on Beirut and Hezbollah attacks on Israeli territory, before expanding in scope.

Since then, Israel has said it has Washington's backing to strike Beirut's southern suburbs -- a Hezbollah stronghold -- if the Iran-backed group targets northern Israeli communities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Wednesday that any attack on Beirut would trigger a "full-scale resumption" of the conflict and insisted that Israeli forces must get out of the country.

US-Iran war news LIVE: Trump says Iran talks could yield result this weekend

US-Iran war news LIVE: US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that talks with Iran are going "very well" and could yield results over the coming weekend.

"I hear the negotiation itself is going very well actually," Trump told reporters, adding of a potential deal: "It could happen... over the weekend."

Trump's assessment differed sharply from that of Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, who said that lines of communication with the United States were still open, but "no tangible progress" had been made in negotiations to end the Middle East war.

Trump also said he wants to separate the US-Iran talks from those on the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

US-Iran war news LIVE: Oil falls as Lebanon and Israel agree on a ceasefire

US-Iran war news LIVE: Oil prices fell on Thursday as a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon boosted hopes for a broader agreement to end the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran that could lead to a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent futures were down 87 cents, or 0.89%, at $96.92 a barrel by 0458 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 78 cents, or 0.81%, to $95.24, paring gains from earlier in the week.

Both Brent and WTI rose about 2% on Wednesday after renewed Middle East hostilities including Iranian attacks on Kuwait and U.S. military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel and Lebanon said late on Wednesday they had agreed to implement a ceasefire, raising hopes for a deal between Washington and Tehran, which has conditioned any agreement in part on an end to fighting between Israel and Lebanon.

US-Iran war news LIVE: Trump would end ceasefire with Iran if US troops are killed, officials, says report

US-Iran war news LIVE: US President Donald Trump has privately told aides that he would consider ending the ceasefire with Iran if Tehran becomes responsible for the deaths of American troops, according to US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The officials said Trump has made clear the "weekslong pause" in airstrikes remains in effect despite ongoing "violent skirmishes" and tensions in the region.

According to the news report, the president's position indicates a reluctance to reignite broader military conflict with Iran, even as clashes continue. Officials suggested Trump may be prepared to tolerate "smaller flare-ups for weeks--or even months" rather than risk a wider war in West Asia.

US-Iran war news LIVE: US-Iran talks hit roadblock over Tehran's upfront demand for 'liquid cash' from frozen assets, says report

US-Iran war news LIVE: The ongoing diplomatic engagements between the United States and Iran have hit a severe impasse following Tehran's rigid demand for the immediate unfreezing of capital at the very start of the process.

According to a report by The Jerusalem Post, the diplomatic deadlock stems from Iran's insistence on the release of "liquid cash" from the billions of dollars in frozen assets, already in the very first phase of the agreement.

This gridlock has emerged despite intense backchannel diplomacy aimed at breaking the geopolitical stalemate. Two sources familiar with the developments informed The Jerusalem Post that international intermediaries have spent recent days attempting to broker a compromise on the contentious issue.

However, these diplomatic interventions have yielded little progress, as the Iranian negotiators have refused to budge and continue to demand the release of the funds in Phase A as part of the framework agreement, even before taking any concrete steps on the ground.

US-Iran war news LIVE: US military denies IRGC claim its missile interceptor damaged Kuwait airport

US-Iran war news LIVE: US Central Command (CENTCOM) has vehemently rejected Iranian assertions regarding the recent destruction at Kuwait International Airport, labelling Tehran's account as "totally false" and accusing it of orchestrating a deliberate strike on civilian infrastructure.

The American military's sharp rebuttal came via a formal statement addressing the incident, which resulted in the death of an Indian national and injuries to dozens of others.

Setting out the facts, CENTCOM stated: "CLAIM: Iran claimed today that it did not attack the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport and damage was instead caused by a US missile interceptor. Totally FALSE."

US-Iran war news LIVE: What is happening in the US-Iran ceasefire?

US-Iran war news LIVE: Efforts to secure a more durable truce have dragged on for weeks as mediators attempt to end the conflict, now in its fourth month.

The talks have been further complicated by Israel's expanding military campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

A regional official said Iran wanted a separate ceasefire in Lebanon to be enforced before returning to negotiations. Even as the US launched strikes on military sites on an Iranian island, President Donald Trump insisted that efforts to preserve the ceasefire with Iran were continuing.

“We’ve been hitting them pretty hard,” Trump said when asked by reporters on Wednesday if the ceasefire remains in place. “I’d say in that part of the world a ceasefire is when you’re shooting in a more moderate manner.”

US-Iran ceasefire news LIVE: The US and Iran clashed again overnight, with Kuwait and Bahrain caught in the crossfire of the most serious flare-up since a ceasefire went into effect in early April.

The strikes follow days of rising tension, including over Israeli operations against Tehran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, that threaten to derail US-Iran talks about an interim peace deal. The sides have agreed on a rough framework to extend their truce by two months and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though negotiations over the final details are dragging on.

Tehran, which had conditioned any deal with the U.S. in part on an end to fighting between Israel and Lebanon, earlier struck Kuwait, damaging its airport and injuring dozens while the U.S. military carried out strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire is contingent on a complete cessation of fire from the Iran-aligned Hezbollah militia and the evacuation of all its operatives from the South Litani Sector, a joint statement released by the U.S. State Department said following negotiations in Washington.
