A video of a woman beating up a boy who was allegedly stalking her on the streets of Bharatpur has gone viral on the social media.
The woman, identified as 19-year-old Vaani Sharma, alleged that the Class 12 student would follow her whenever she went on her morning jog. “On July 11, this boy declared to his companions that I was his girlfriend. I asked a morning walker to lend me his stick, then proceeded to teach him a good lesson,” she said.
Sharma, who wants to join the Army, is currently studying for the Combined Defence Services examinations. She has been jogging 15 kilometres every morning as part of her preparations for an upcoming physical test.
“Girls are not weak: They can handle such stalkers. Men feel they can harass women because we rarely put up any resistance,” said Sharma, who moved in with her maternal grandparents after her father died in 2003. Her mother, a government school teacher, is posted at Bhiwadi in the national capital region.
Suraj Prakash Kaushik, her maternal grandfather, said Sharma informed them about the incident that very day. “She is a brave girl who wants to fulfill her father’s dream by becoming an Army officer,” he added.
Sharma, however, did not file a police complaint because she did not want to spoil the future of a Class 12 student. “I am capable of handling such ruffians myself,” she said.
