New Zealand cricket team, who had earlier named nine players for the series against Indian cricket team, included the uncapped duo of Todd Astle, Glenn Phillips, along with pacer Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and George Worker in the squad to take on India in a three-match ODI and three-match T20I series starting October 22 in Mumbai.
There will be two changes for the T20Is, with Ish Sodhi and Tom Bruce travelling with the touring party for the ODIs despite not being named. Sodhi and Bruce will replace Ross Taylor and George Worker, who will return home post the ODI series.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) released a statement which said, “Ish Sodhi and Tom Bruce will travel with the squad for the ODIs, having been named in the Twenty20 squad. Ross Taylor and Worker will return to New Zealand following the conclusion of the ODIs.”
“Todd has been one of the best white-ball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and he’s backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A. Todd brings all round skill to the squad, quality leg spin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat,” said New Zealand A manager Gavin Larsen.
“Glenn has made an immediate effect in domestic cricket and has certainly taken his opportunity over here with NZ A, including an outstanding 140 not out. Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 we’ve picked,” he added.
Philips has been the leading run-getter in the ongoing series against India A, scoring 155 runs in the three games at an average of 77.50, including a knock of 140 which resulted in New Zealand A’s second game ending in a tie.
New Zealand left out all-rounder James Neesham and Neil Broom for this series following their ordinary performances in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 played in England earlier this year.
Meanwhile, members of the New Zealand cricket team had a training session on Saturday morning at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai for one-and-a-half hours.
While there were no net sessions for the Kiwi cricketers, they played football as well as volleyball to get going. The New Zealand cricketers also did some catching practice including slip catching.
New Zealand will be playing two 50-overs warm-up matches against the Indian Board President’s XI on October 17 and 19. Both the matches will be played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, whereas the first ODI will be at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, October 22.
India and New Zealand had played a competitive series last year, with the hosts clinching the five-match affair 3-2 only in the final game at Hyderabad.
