3 more farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha
Three more cotton-growing farmers of Vidarbha have committed suicide in the region in last 48 hours. Three more cotton-growing farmers of Vidarbha have committed suicide in the region in last 48 hours.
According to reports reaching here this evening, all the victims ended their lives when their newly sown seeds were washed away by heavy rains before the seedlings had a chance to take root.
Among the deceased, two were from Yavatmal while one was from Amravati district. The victims were identified as: Santosh Ramkrishna Sidam (34) of Mangi village, Anil Marape (38) of Thanegaon (both from Yavatmal district) while Charan Singh Rathod (60) was from Parsode in Amravati district, the reports said.
Kishore Tiwari, president of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti informed that all the farmers killed themselves by consuming pesticides, when they saw that their sowing were washed away following incessant rains and they could not be able to re-generate funds, either from banks or private moneylenders.
He said the fact that farmers have to buy new seeds every year, the costly use of genetic manufactured (GM) seeds, use of pesticides and great reduction in crop value have often times left farmers bankrupt and as a result many famrers are falling into endless cycle of debts, depression, hopelessness and despair.
Besides, the washing way of sowing was a blow for them and they have no choice but to end their lives, he pointed out.
Tiwari urged the government that it should assure the farmers that it would provide them fresh loans immediately, for re-sowing the crops in the wake of a lood-like situation in Vidarbha to prevent the on-going suicide.
With the deaths of these three farmers, the toll has risen to 32 this month while the figure was 69 last month.
The Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti that has been documenting the farmers’ suicide in the region since 2002 claimed that as many as 448 farmers have killed themselves because of agrarian crisis since January this year, while the figure was 916 in 2012.
Ashwin Mudgal, the collector of Yavatmal district admitted that he has received of farmers’ suicide in his district. “I am in Mumbai for a meeting. I have directed the concerned tahsildar to visit both the villages and examine whether both the farmers committed suicide because of agrarian crisis,” he added.
