He was speaking after inaugurating the four-day farmers’ fair and exhibition at the Chandrashekhar Azad Agricultural and Technological University (CSA) here on Tuesday. Agarwal said that modern technology had vast potential to raise the crop production in the country. “Due to globalisation, quality of the crop has become important. To compete in the global market, farmers should concentrate on quality production of crops,” he added.

Referring to the university’s financial problems, Agarwal assured that the State Government was serious about solving them. “I will take up the matter with the government,” he said. He also released a textbook on Computer Science written by Dr Munish Gangwar and Dr Arun Srivastava.

Speaking on the occasion, vice-chancellor of the university Dr MM Agarwal informed that university scientists had developed about 150 species of different crops, cultivated successfully in different climatic zones of the state and the country. Besides, the Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Krishi Gyan Kendras, established in every district, provide technological assistance to farmers. He called upon the scientists to help in improving the condition of the landless people belonging to the below poverty line category, who were dependent mainly on agriculture for their living.

Agriculture Research director, Dr RP Katiyar, in his address, said that many of the hybrid varieties, developed by the university, are grown in countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Taiwan. Similarly many of its technical developments related to insecticide, coordinated farming and weed management are also popular all over the world.

Large number of farmers from the neighbouring districts also visited the fair that has numerous stalls including those about hybrid qualities of crop, techniques of poultry farming, soil examination, and judging the quality of egg and milk.

Later at the technical session, scientists and eminent farmers gave tips for improving crop production and preventing crop diseases.
