AMUSU flays death sentence to Saddam

THE AMU Students’ Union has strongly condemned the decision of an Iraqi Tribunal that sentenced Saddam Hussain to death. Talking to HT, secretary of the union Sulaiman Mohd Khan said the court that delivered the verdict was set up by the USA.
The judicial procedures, followed to take the decision, were highly questionable. He agreed with the view of the Amnesty International, regarding the verdict.
It said that that the verdict violated all norms of international law and it would increase violence Iraq.
He said president Bush was himself guilty of invading Iraq on a false pretext of presence of weapons of mass destruction and then committing war crimes in Iraq.
“Therefore, the International Tribunal should try him,” he said. President of the union Nafees Ahmad said the verdict amounted to ‘judicial murder’ and added Saddam Hussain was alleged to have been responsible for the murder of 148 people, and he was sentenced to death. He asked who would punish Bush who was responsible for the murder of more than seven lakh innocent Iraqis.
Meet held
A meet on ‘Equality of Opportunity for Women’ was held at Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh yesterday. The meet was held as part of the centenary celebrations of women’s education at the Women’s College.
The programme started with the recitation of the Holy Quaran.
Nazia Hasan, lecturer of English at the Women’s College, welcomed the participants.
Those who participated in the meet were: Prof Majida Asad of the Delhi University, Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof Iqbal Ansari of the Aligarh Muslim University, Prof Hameeda Ahmed of the Department of Psychology, AMU and Prof Faizan Mustafa, Registrar at the AMU.
Addressing the seminar, Prof Imtiaz Ahmad said the Women’s College had the honour of being a pioneer in the field of women’s education. Prof Faizan Mustafa, dean, faculty of law, spoke about the legal aspects of the position of women in India. He spoke about the Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution, which grant equal opportunities to women.
He laid stress on the need for women’s empowerment. Prof Majida Asad, who also spoke on the occasion, said those girls who did not have get opportunity, should be given proper chances. Prof Iqbal Ansari proposed setting up of an ‘Equal Opportunities Commission.
Prof. Imtiaz Ahmed, Chairperson of the panel, said, “Though the Constitution has granted equality for women, certain social problems and the nature of the state are not allowing it to take place in reality.”
Prof Imtiaz Ahmed further said women should grab the opportunities that were coming in their way. The students of Women’s College came forward with queries on hot topics like the Domestic Violence Act and the issue of Hijab.
