THE OPPOSITION today staged a walkout in the State Assembly, demanding resignation of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over his alleged misuse of position to get a criminal case against him withdrawn.
Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi and other members raised the issue during the question hour. However, Speaker Ishwardas Rohani asked them to allow smooth conduct of the question hour. The moment zero hour began Jamuna Devi again raised the issue. The Opposition members demanded discussion on it.
Amid slogan shouting, Congress and other opposition MLAs said the chief minister should immediately step down on moral grounds.
Besides misusing his position to withdraw the case the CM had also concealed the fact regarding the criminal case in his nomination papers he had filed for Lok Sabha elections, they added.
Jamuna Devi said the CM was accused in the case under sections 147 and 341 of IPC and the case was pending in a court from 1996 but it was withdrawn by the CM.
Samajwadi Party’s Dr Sunilam pressed for immediate discussion on the issue. When the Leader of Opposition started reading out a one-page draft on the issue, the Speaker sought to know under what rule she was reading out the written matter. He told the Opposition members that he had sought the government’s report vis-à-vis the memorandum they gave to him in this regard.
He added since they had given the memorandum to him this morning only they should wait for some time to know about the government’s reply.
Not satisfied with the Speaker’ ruling the Opposition members led by Jamuna Devi staged walkout. PWD Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya was heard saying the State Government had withdrawn as many as 80,000 cases and the case (related to the CM) was one of them.
Those against whom cases had been withdrawn include Satyadev Katare, Dr Sunilam and others as well. While raising slogans they stood at the main entrance of Vidhan Sabha and demanded the CM’s resignation. Those who lodged their protest included State Congress president Subhash Yadav, Sajjan Singh Verma, Ajay Singh, Indrajeet Patel, Govind Rajput, the CPM’s Ramlakhan Sharma and Samajvadi Party’s Dr Sunilam.
Earlier, when the Assembly resumed its winter session this morning after it was adjourned on December 23 last, the House condoled the demise of ex-MLA Sardar Gulab Singh.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi, the CPM’s Ramlakhan Sharma, Samajvadi Party’s Dr Sunilam, Gondwana Gantantra Party’s Manmohan Shah Batti, Nationalist Congress Party’s Hameed Kazi and the BSP’s Dr IMP Verma paid tributes to the departed leader.
Thereafter, the Assembly was adjourned for five minutes as a token of respect to the late leader.
