A GROUP of seers, under the banner of Hindu Dharmacharya Sabha, is all set to file a PIL in the Supreme Court, seeking cancellation of the Setu Samudaram project.

“The bridge was made by Lord Ram with help of a huge army of monkeys when they wanted to reach Sri Lanka after crossing the ocean in search of Sita,” said Swami Avimukteshwaranand, a disciple of Shankaracharya of Dwarkapeeth and Jyotishpeeth, Swaroopanand Sarswati.

“The demolition of the bridge would be in violation of the Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, Paris Declaration letter of UNESCO in 1972 and places of Worship (Special Provisions) of 1991 and violation of fundamental religious freedom under Section 25 and 26 of the Constitution, he added.

Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, he condemned the western historians for describing Lord Ram and Ramayan as an imaginary story. “A conspiracy is being hatched to eliminate signs of Hinduism. Even, the birthplace of Lord Ram in Ayodhya is under dispute,” he lamented .

The swami said Lord Ram actually existed. He had built a 45-km long bridge with the help of Lord Hanuman and a huge force of monkeys to reach Sri Lanka for rescue of Sita. Even, American agency, NASA, issuing a satellite picture on October 8, 2002, indicated that a bridge existed on the ocean in the Pak Jaldamru area between Rameshwaram and Sri Lanka many years back. The bridge is a sign of religious and archeological faith.

“Government of India, in association with Sri Lankan government, wants to demolish this bridge to pave way for smooth transporation of ships through a shorter route between the two countries for commercial gains,” he said.

The saint informed that a meeting of Hindu Dharmacharya Mahasabha was held in Chennai on June 19 in which a strategy was chalked out to mount pressure on the Union Government for cancillation of the project to save a poius pilgrimage of Hindus.

A memorandum was also faxed to President and Prime Minister in this connection but no positive step had been initiated by the government while a global tender would be invited shortly for demolition of the bridge and to construct the ocean way.

The Hindu saints would not tolerate it and stage a dharna at the Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Saturday, to mount pressure in support of their demand for cancellation of the project he said, adding that if the government did not relent to the demand, a PIL would be filed shortly by Supreme Court lawyer, Parmeshwar Nath Mishra.
