EC transfers Bihar DM, SP transferred for Union minister's public meeting

The EC has ordered immediate transfer of Bihar District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police for allowing a Union minister to hold a public meeting within a school premise while an examination was going on, causing inconvenience to the students. The officials will be transferred to non-poll related assignments.

The Election Commission has ordered immediate transfer of two senior Bihar officials for allowing Union Minister of State for Home, Shakeel Ahmed, to hold a public meeting within the premises of a school at Darbhanga even as examinations were going on.

In a directive to the Bihar Chief Secretary, the EC asked him to post District Magistrate Arun Prasad and Superintendent of Police P K Darad to non-poll related assignments.

The Commission said that it had been brought to its notice that the public meeting addressed by Ahmed in the premises of Khirma High School at Darbhanga on March 14 caused inconvenience to the students who were appearing in a practical examination. "The Commission has taken a serious note of this incident," it said.

A panel of 3 officers each must be forwarded to the Commission, in consultation with the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, latest by 1300 hrs of March 17, 2009 for the EC's consideration, it said.

The Commission also said that Rameshwar Bhagat, SDO, Darbhanga Sadar sub-division should be immediately placed under suspension and disciplinary proceedings initiated.

The charge sheet/explanation memo to these officers should be prepared in consultation with the Chief Electoral Officer, Bihar, the Commission said.
