Honey Singh hails vodka from varsity stage

Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh raised a slogan - quite literally - in favour of alcohol from the stage at a private university here on Thursday night. Even though the show was held few hours after the Punjab and Haryana high court summoned him for May 14 to explain his allegedly vulgar lyrics, Honey remained his brazen self and ruffled many feathers as he shouted, "Vodka zindabad" (hail vodka)" at his concert at Graphic Era University.

While a large section of the crowd continued to enjoy his performance, many students and faculty were left red-faced.

Vaibhav Dhasmana, one of the students, said, "He should have paid heed to his choice of words from the stage of an educational institute. There's a certain decorum that he should have kept in mind."

The university administration took immediate action on the issue, claimed Prakash Barthwal, the media officer of GEU: "Disapproval (of his statement) was conveyed to him shortly thereafter."

Apparently, some of his double entendres on girls, too, didn't go down well with many in the crowd, though a large section roared in appreciation.

Honey and other singers have faced protests in Punjab, while the lyrics of many of his songs have courted controversy in cities like Gurgaon, where his concert was called off on the New Year's Eve, and in Lucknow, where an FIR was filed against him.

The rapper remained unavailable for a comment despite repeated attempts.
