The ‘vision’ is proposed to transform the complexion of the post-graduate education by the year 2013. Under the plan, each post-graduate department will select a group of undergraduate students as junior fellows either from the IIT-K or from some other institute and at a nominal stipend. The object of the scheme was to inculcate a spirit of research among them and to develop a network of prospective research candidates.

Similarly, the institute has a separate vision for improving the academic environment of undergraduate education by 2011. The goal of this endeavour is to make the curriculum more flexible and to motivate students to acquire skills and a spirit of innovation.

To achieve this goal, the Institute will review the examination pattern , hands-on experience, grading system, students counselling and curriculum contents based on students feedback and industry input. Teaching laboratories will be improved and new laboratories set up. Students will be encouraged to adapt themselves to the principles of ‘Learning by Doing’. Programmes for “Learning Outside the Classrooms” will also be encouraged.

For promoting sponsored research, the vision proposed sponsored research funding should reach Rs 100 crore in the next five years.
