The Ashutosh Gowariker directorial, which goes on the floors this week, is about the Chittagong Uprising of 1930-34. It is based on the book Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising: 1930-34, by Delhi-based journalist Manini Chatterjee. Bachchan plays Surjya Sen, fondly called Masterda, who led the uprising in 1930. Deepika Padukone has been signed opposite him.
The film was first offered to Asin and Sonam Kapoor, who turned it down due to busy schedules. The film marks Gowariker’s departure from UTV Motion Pictures after making three films — Swades, Jodhaa Akbar and What’s Your Rashee — with them.
He has now tied up with PVR Pictures. Speaking about the film, Gowarikar’s wife Sunita said, “It’s a period thriller. Once we decided to bring it on screen, we purchased the rights of the book.”
