SP secures lion?s share

THE RULING Samajwadi Party today won majority of seats in the Zila Panchayat chairmen?s election in the state. Polls were held in 58 districts as in 12 districts candidates were elected unopposed. The BSP had also succeeded in registering its victory in some districts. Since several voters could not reach polling stations at Mahoba there was possibility of postponement of the election there.

THE RULING Samajwadi Party today won majority of seats in the Zila Panchayat chairmen’s election in the state.

Polls were held in 58 districts as in 12 districts candidates were elected unopposed. The BSP had also succeeded in registering its victory in some districts. Since several voters could not reach polling stations at Mahoba there was possibility of postponement of the election there.

The SP suffered a major jolt in Sitapur where party rebel Ajay Bhargava trounced official nominee Nirmala Rawat by a margin of 14 votes. In Shrawasti, SP’s Ram Adhar won by lottery as both SP and BSP had got eight votes each.

Ram Adhar defeated BSP’s Bhagauti. Samajwadi Party also succeeded in winning seats in Allahabad, Rae Bareli, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar,
Deoria, Azamgarh, Moradabad, Bijnaur, Jyotibaphule Nagar, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Badayun. The party had earlier won nine seats unopposed.

In Sultanpur BSP’s Gita Saroj trounced SP’s Reshma by 15 votes. Congress and BJP had supported the BSP in Sultanpur.

In Faizabad, BSP’s Malti Singh defeated SP’s Malti Yadav. In Ambedkar Nagar, Sudha Verma of the BSP won the election by defeating the SP’s Mithlesh Singh by 13 votes.

In Barabanki, BSP candidate Sheela Singh defeated Dinesh Verma of the Samajwadi Party by four votes, ending the SP’s 15-year reign over the zila panchayat. In Varanasi SP-backed candidate Suchita Patel was elected chairperson. She defeated her nearest rival Apna Dal-backed Anil Kumar by a margin of one vote. In Mirzapur, SP’s Prabhawati Devi defeated Shivani Patel of BSP.

In Maharajganj, Ujjwala Chaudhary of the BJP retained the seat for the second consecutive term. In Sant Kabirnagar, SP’s Ameena Khatoon was elected chairperson of the zila panchayat by a margin of one vote. In Banda, SP-backed Kushad Dhwaj Singh alias Chhuttan Bhaiyya was elected.

In Aligarh, the joint SP-BSP candidate RS Khatria defeated the BJP’s Champa Devi by a margin of six votes. In Basti, the SP’s Sharda Devi polled 23 votes against BSP candidate Sarla Jaiswal’s two votes. In Gonda, BSP’s Gyanwati won the election. In Balrampur, BSP’s Huma Zaheer won. In Ambedkar Nagar, BSP’s Sudha Verma defeated the SP’s Mithlesh Singh by 13 votes. In Siddharthnagar, Janaknandini Chaurasia was elected.

In Jaunpur, the SP’s Kalawati Yadav (42 votes) defeated the BSP’s Prabhawati Pal (30 votes). In Amroha, SP candidate and State Minister for Backward Castes Mehboob Ali’s wife Sakina Begum was elected zila panchayat chairperson. The SP’s Premwati Suman won in Agra.
