Stadium, sports college proposal gets final nod

THE CITY will soon have a cricket stadium of international standard and a women's sports college on the same premises in Jhunsi, nearly 13 kilometre away from the city. The foundation stone of the college and the stadium will be laid in the last week of this month.

State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister RK Chaudhry convened a meeting with district magistrate Amrit Abhijat, sports director Vinod Kumar Kharbanda, director of the sports colleges of Lucknow and Gorakhpur Nirmal Kumar Saini, regional sports officer Vijay Kumar and general manager of Jal Nigam's construction unit Muri Baksh, project director SK Rao and others at Circuit House here and discussed all aspects related to construction of the sports college and international stadium at Jhunsi.

The sports college and stadium will be constructed on 47 acre land with a cost of Rs 41.97 crore. The minister said that international cricket matches would be easily organised at the stadium where all modern facilities would be provided by the State Government.

The women's college will have a 250-room hostel, an auditorium of 800 seats, a swimming pool, a multi-purpose hall, a hockey field, some residential flats for coaches and an administrative building. The Jal Nigam GM said that sports college would be constructed within one year. District magistrate suggested to form a review committee having Commissioner of the Allahabad division, DM, SSP, sports director, regional sports officer, three international and three state-level players of repute to monitor the progress.

The committee meeting may be held every month to review the progress followed by submission of its report to the State Government. The Sports Minister okayed the proposal to this effect. The Sports Minister said a proposal to construct a modern sports college in Naini area was under consideration and for that land of 40 acre was being arranged in the same area. He also announced that like international cricketer Mohammed Kaif, the government would provide a residential flat to Arjuna awardee Abhinn Shyam Gupta, a star badminton player in Allahabad city.
