The first test tube baby was born at his nursing home in Agra and today the boy called Utsav is nine-year-old, he said. Though the success rate of a test tube baby was 30 to 40 per cent only, still it was one of the best options available today, said Dr Malhotra. However, he warned women of more age to be careful while going for this process.

He said that the only drawback of this technology was that the medicines used were very costly, as the Government charges 300 per cent custom duty on these drugs.

Owing to it, for a young couple the complete one-month treatment cost between Rs 50,000-60,000 and for an older couple (35+) the treatment would cost anything between 75,000 to one lakh rupees.

He claimed that if the custom duty was lifted from the drugs the treatment could cost around Rs 10,000 only.

On lack of awareness among people with regard to the technology, Dr Malhotra said even today there were confusions among the couples that the doctors use the sperms of a donor to fertilize a baby however, the truth was that the doctors use sperms or eggs of a donor only when there was no production of either sperm or eggs in the couple, and that too only after the prior permission from them.

Speaking on the various gynecological problems among married unmarried women, Dr Jaideep Malhotra of Malhotra Test Tube Baby Centre, Agra said that even unmarried women face different gynecological problems including, vaginal discharge (a type of an infection), irregular menstrual cycle, various hormonal changes like growing hair on the face etc.

She said that most of the problems occur due to use of perfumed soaps and antiseptics. However, girls think that the use of antiseptic was quiet hygienic but the truth was that use of antiseptic not only kills bacteria, which spreads infection but also those bacteria which protect the intestinal flora, therefore, the best thing was to use the warm water.
