UGC chairman?s stress on women?s education
CHAIRMAN OF University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Sukhadeo Thorat on Friday stressed on the need of educating women to help India become a knowledge society. He said that efforts were on in promoting women education in institutions of higher education and that the UGC has introduced many a new scheme to help varsities and colleges introduce courses with this very aim.

CHAIRMAN OF University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Sukhadeo Thorat on Friday stressed on the need of educating women to help India become a knowledge society. He said that efforts were on in promoting women education in institutions of higher education and that the UGC has introduced many a new scheme to help varsities and colleges introduce courses with this very aim.
Speaking at a function organised t]o inaugurate the newly constructed Kalpana Chawla hostel in the women's college campus of the Allahabad University (AU), Prof Thorat urged AU authorities to procure details about the UGC schemes for women education and studies and urged them to take an initiative to make full use of them. He also promised all support in any such endeavour that AU may decide to undertake.
Prof Thorat said that the time has come to have more and more women administrators in institutions of higher education and that was the reason some steps have been taken in this regard. He expressed hope that soon the scenario will change for the better.
Praising the naming of the girls' hostel after the famous astronaut Kalpana Chawla, he said that she was a hero for all Indians.
He expressed hope that students especially girls, would feel motivated to dream big and work hard to make those dreams come true following on the footsteps of the Karnal girl who went on to pursue higher education in the US and then managed become a part of the Columbia shuttle team on the base of her sheer hardwork and determination. A number of girl students of the varsity were present on the occasion.
Earlier, Prof Thorat inaugurated the hostel having the capacity to accommodate 122 students. He also garlanded a picture of Kalpana Chawla to mark the occasion.
Along with AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe, Dean Students Welfare Prof Jagdamba Singh, Chairman Board of Trustees Prof GK Rai, Proctor Prof Jata Shankar and Chief Public Information Officer Prof Amrendra Singh, Prof Thorat also took a round of the hostel that besides spacious rooms has a modern and a well equipped kitchen as well as a dining hall that can accommodate almost the entire hostel strength in two rounds.
The hostel has been constructed to accommodate out-station female students coming to Allahabad to pursue professional courses at AU like BTech and MBA.
Following the inaugural function, Prof Thorat also visited the historical Vijay Nagram Hall of the varsity.
