Soft vs hard launch on social media: When should you go public with your relationship?
Find out how should you announce your relationship on social media. Soft and hard launches are the popular ways Gen Z announce their partner.
In a digital first world, social media has an important role in how one shares their experiences online. No longer is it just a double date or full-on in-person declaration in front of friends and family. Whatever is being shared is thoughtfully curated and scrutinised. So, a face reveal of your partner is a big deal. The timeline of how it unfolds depends, but it gradually transitions from soft launches, and hopefully, the big reveal someday- the hard launch.

Soft launches are the snapshots that feature the partner, subtly without showing the face. Instead, it includes fleeting glimpses like hand on hand, silhouette, just enough to pique curiosity but maintaining privacy as well. There's a sense of mystery in soft launches.
A hard launch, simply put, fully reveals their identity. The photos prominently feature their face, and they may even be tagged in the post.
But how do you know when to soft launch and when to go all out?
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Ravi Mittal, founder and CEO of dating app, QuackQuack, shared when couples should stay low-key with soft launch and when they make clear public declaration of their relationship with hard launch.

When soft launch makes sense

A soft launch makes everyone guess who the mystery person is. There's a sense of teasing playfulness to the mysterious glimpses.
Ravi shared when soft launch makes sense:
- To begin with it is a more preferred method in the early stages of a relationship when there is commitment but uncertainty about longevity. In such cases, soft launching gives recognition to the relationship without pressure.
- When the couple wants both privacy and to acknowledge their relationship and share bits and pieces of their happiness.
- A public declaration of a relationship can come with certain external pressure, commentary from friends and family and judgment in some cases. Soft launching helps maintain boundaries.
When hard launch seems right

Hard launch is confident and goes all out, making the relationship public. It removes any ambiguous snapshots and instead includes full-face photos. While the soft launch elicits a secretive vibe, hard launches are goofy and fun.
Ravi shared when relationships hard launch on social media:
- When it's a well-established relationship with the potential for long-term commitment. If the couple has been together for a significant period of time, a hard launch can solidify the relationship.
- When both partners are comfortable with social media presence. Some couples are more private than others, and in some relationships, one partner might enjoy their privacy more than the other; in such cases, a hard launch isn't the right option. But when both partners are aligned on their willingness for social media exposure, it's the right choice.
- When it's a major relationship event, like an anniversary or engagement announcement, or any other significant event that deserves direct acknowledgment.
- For some couples, transparency is important to show that their feelings are genuine. A hard launch can demonstrate that easily.
What to do if your partner didn't introduce you on social media?
With so much buzz around soft and hard launches and how relationships unfold on social media, it can be concerning if your partner doesn’t feature you anywhere online. Not falling anywhere between a soft or hard launch may feel unsettling, triggering your insecurity and anxiety about whether your partner is embarrassed or doesn’t take the relationship seriously. But, before jumping to conclusions, it’s important not to be swayed by social media trends.
Ravi shared what you should do:
- When the person is normally very active on social media and regularly updates every minor life event on their profile, somehow, they have been hesitant about updating their relationship status. In such situations, while it is natural to be worried, 3 out of 5 times, there are some underlying reasons for their hesitation; jumping to the worst conclusion causes unnecessary conflicts. It is best to communicate your concerns to your partner and directly ask them to clarify their reluctance.
- Discuss your expectations around social media presence early on; this might seem a bit too much, but in today's digital age, it can help avoid any mismatch between what you expected and what finally unfolded.
