Singer-turned-Union minister Babul Supriyo invited artiste and former Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Kabir Suman to an open debate on politics in West Bengal but received an unusual proposal.

Suman, in turn, asked Supriyo to a duel of political songs with him. Supriyo contested on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from the Asansol Lok Sabha seat for a second term in the general election this year.

According to Suman, who is credited with bringing a fresh lease of life in Bengali modern songs with unusual lyrics and musical compositions in the 1990s, Supriyo sent him a series of messages on Wednesday and invited him to take part in a political debate in public with him.

Suman, a national award-winning music composer who is a staunch critic of the BJP, turned down the proposal, saying he would not be able to keep his cool during a political debate. The 70-year-old challenged Supriyo, who has earned popularity as a Bollywood playback singer, and invited him to a duel of political songs.

Later, Suman, theTMC Lok Sabha member from 2009 to 2014, made public the messages Supriyo and he exchanged on WhatsApp.

The conversation started with Supriyo texting Suman asking why an artist of his stature did not pen songs against Mamata Banerjee’s ‘politics of appeasement’ and ‘atrocities on Hindus’.

“U r an artist first, that’s what you are - what you are for - then comes your Religion, of course u r a convert but that’s your personal choice, I shouldn’t & wont comment on that .. but shocked to see your FaceBook page today !!! Full of hate speeches in the name of religion !! (sic),” Supriyo wrote.

“That’s your choice but never knew Mamta could influence your Su-Monn with her Appeasement Politics to such an extreme extent where you lose your kobitto (poet’s mind) !! I represent BJP - that’s my choice - but I NEVER EVER write posts in the name of religion !!! (sic),” the 48-year-old BJP leader said.

Suman wrote back, “Let’s have it out in public. Music is our common medium. You and I’ll sing out our political faith and engage in a musical duel as well as a give and take.”

Supriyo declined. “U r a song writer – composer. I am not !! Do not wish to use others’ songs & lyrics to counter you .. u sing, my words will be enough.. I shall make music with that (sic).”

But Suman would not agree.

“You heard me, Sir. No spoken words. Words separate. Music unites. Words will only create waves and waves and heat things up. If you are no song writer get some one to write songs for you. Or would you like me to write songs for you which you could put to tune and sing against me and Mamata too (sic).”

Supriyo, however, said that he had no problem if Suman sang during the proposed public interaction but he would use words and songs both.

“No verbal duel. Let’s sing our political faith, our belief, our anger, our dreams, our spirit, our ideology. You said you are a musician and you mocked my ability as a poet. Now take this challenge, face me on stage as a fellow musician. Let’s see what good poetry you sing,” Suman wrote.

After some time, Supriyo, too, took to Facebook and posted screenshots of parts of their conversation.

Then he announced, “I don’t want to waste time on one whose mind and humanity is ruined… This matter ends for me now !! Full Stop.”

Supriyo also said Suman’s posting of the ‘private conversation’ on social media was ‘uncouth’ and alleged that he was being trolled on social media by Suman’s ‘pets’. He finally declared he has blocked the former lawmaker on both Facebook and WhatsApp.
