Lok Sabha elections 2019: In Chhattisgarh, Congress hopes to gain from 2018 win

Congress is looking to build on its performance in the state assembly elections held last year when it wrested power from the BJP by winning 68 out of the 90 assembly seats.

Elections in Chhattisgarh come to an end with the remaining seven of its 11 Lok Sabha seats going to polls on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to retain power in the state, where it has won 10 out of the 11 seats since 2004. In 2014, it won six of the seats going to the polls on Tuesday.

Congress is looking to build on its performance in the state assembly elections held last year when it wrested power from the BJP by winning 68 out of the 90 assembly seats.

In Durg, Congress has fielded former legislator Pratima Chandrakar, who belongs to the backward Kurmi community. She is up against another Kurmi, BJP’s Vijay Baghel. It is expected to be a triangular contest in Janjgir-Champa, a seat reserved for the Scheduled Caste community. Congress’s Ravi Bhardwaj, BJP’s Guharam Ajgale and Bahujan Samaj Party’s Dauram Ratnakar are in the fray.
