Two people were arrested for allegedly cheating many through an online shopping portal.
According to police, the two used to get in touch with buyers and sellers through the website and cheated them by showing a self-typed message, which they claimed was from the bank.
“Mohammed Ayaz Sayyed contacted the 37-year-old complainant after seeing an advertorial of his car on sale. They met near a hotel at BKC in Bandra and after checking the papers, the accused went to the washroom. He then sent a self-typed message to the complainant, saying the money had been debited from his account,” said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police, zone 8.
The police said the accused used to choose a holiday to meet the people. After sending the message, he used to tell them that the money would be credited the next day as it was a holiday.
According to police, Mohammed used to take the car to a garage, where another accused Arif Sayyed used to work. “We arrested Mohammed on May 18 and arrested Arif on May 20,” said Kumbhare.
“Mohammed also used to post advertorials on the website to sell cars. When he used to meet customers, he used to tell them that many people have been enquiring about the car and used to take advance from them. He then used to go off radar when the date of delivery used to come. We have recovered eight cars, including high-end ones such as BMW,” said Kumbhare.
Police said that the accused has conned victims from Trombay, Bandra, Vikhroli and other regions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
