Asangaon near Mumbai to become first green station on Central Railway network

The station will be declared green station on February 4

The Central Railway (CR) plans to develop Asangaon on Kalyan-Kasara section as the first green railway station on its network.

According to CR officials, the station will be declared green station on February 4 when all electric appliances such as lights, fans and ticketing machines will run on wind or solar energy.

More than 75,000 commuters use the station daily. Currently, the power consumption of the station is about 11 kilowatt.

Railway officials said they are setting up a 10 kilowatt solar plant and a six kilowatt wind energy plant at Asangaon station.

“Asangaon will be the first green station on CR. The entire energy need of the station will be fulfilled from 16 kw of renewable energy,” said SK Jain, divisional railway manager.

The supply from the renewable sources will bring down the station’s power bill, besides reducing its carbon footprints. The CR will put the extra renewable energy in the local grid, CR officials said.

Besides Asangaon, 50 other railway stations will see conventional lights being replaced by LED light. CR officials said the switch to LED lights will help them save Rs1.48 crore annually.
