The victim identified as Salim, who was from Hyderabad, was homeless and slept on streets. Salim’s friend Ashok Babar, 42, who filed the complaint, was near the accident spot when the incident occurred. Babar told cops that he heard a loud thud and rushed to see what had happened. He said Salim was lying on the ground and the white Mercedes was speeding away towards Andheri. Jha, who was driving a businessman’s car, was caught at the next signal by traffic police.

Babar told cops that Salim was going to get food when the car knocked him down. While the passersby called the police, Babar took Salim to VN Desai hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Police are still trying to trace Salim’s kin as none have come forward so far.

Jha was booked under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC and Sections 184 and 134 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
