Doctors said Kaskar, who is lodged in Thane Central Jail, was referred to the hospital by jail authorities. “The patient was brought in around 10.15pm after he complained of chest pain and giddiness. He is stable now,” said a senior doctor at JJ hospital, who did not wish to be named.

Police officials said Kaskar’s health may have been affected as he was fasting for Ramzan.

A police officer from Thane anti-extortion cell said: “Kaskar complained of chest pain on Monday afternoon and he was taken to Thane civil hospital. He was treated and sent back to Thane jail as he seemed fine, but at night, when he again complained of severe chest pain and giddiness, he was taken to JJ.”

In September 2017, Kaskar was arrested in connection with an extortion case.
