Mechanised sweeping row: Three officials of Mumbai civic body suspended for laxity

Mumbai city news: In the first case, the assistant supervisor, Prakash Sable, was suspended for not supervising mechanised sweeping in Ghatkopar, a source said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday suspended an assistant supervisor from N-ward in Ghatkopar and two junior overseers from Ghatkopar and Bhandup for alleged dereliction of duty.

In the second case, two junior overseers of the solid waste management (SWM) department were suspended for not monitoring mechanised sweeping.

In the first case, the assistant supervisor, Prakash Sable, was suspended for not supervising mechanised sweeping in Ghatkopar, a source said. During a surprise visit on Tuesday, senior civic officials found that MG Road and Barrister Nath Road in Ghatkopar (East) were full of trash.

“Sable did not follow instructions and was arrogant,” read his suspension order.

In the second case, two junior overseers of the solid waste management (SWM) department were suspended for not monitoring mechanised sweeping, said an official from the SWM department. Junior overseers are responsible for maintaining cleanliness.

The BMC introduced mechanised sweeping on a pilot basis in each ward on June 1. The campaign has run into trouble. The contractor has been complaining about parked vehicles and stalls at several locations, which hinder the use of heavy machines, said another official.
