The incident occurred on July 14, but the Class 1 student’s parents heard about it only on July 17.

A teacher from a private English-medium school in Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stripping a five-year-old student in class as punishment for whistling.

The incident occurred on July 14, but the Class 1 student’s parents are said to have learnt about it only on Tuesday.

The complaint registered by the child’s father at Kalamboli police station stated that the class teacher humiliated his son by removing his trousers and making him stand in his underpants in front of students in the class.

The child did not tell his parents about the incident, but his mother learnt of it from his classmates’ parents when she went to pick him up from school on Tuesday. Soon after, the father approached the police.

The complainant and school officials who visited the police station refused to speak about the issue. “The class teacher has been charged with cruelty to child under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015,” Machindra Khade, senior inspector of Kalamboli police station, confirmed.

The teacher was presented in court on Wednesday afternoon and released on bail of Rs15,000.
