MUMBAI: The recent death of a 55-year-old auto-rickshaw driver in Kandivli has taken the number of deaths caused by leptospirosis this year to six. The Vaibhav Nagar resident died due to respiratory failure resulting out of leptospirosis.

The deceased was being treated at a private clinic between August 16 and August 18 before being shifted to Kasturba Hospital. “The patient was diabetic. He was transferred to the hospital after his condition deteriorated,” a health official from BMC said. He died on August 19, after suffering from high fever, chest pain and breathlessness for over three to four days.

“The medical officer of the local ward conducted a house-to-house survey to check if there were more people in the deceased’s locality who had the same symptoms. Of the 2,920 residents screened, four showed symptoms of fever and were treated,” the health official added.
